CONCORD, NH — The Community College System of New Hampshire kicked off National Apprenticeship Week on Monday, an effort to assist those businesses with workforce shortages, to hire and retrain workers. The ApprenticeshipNH program runs through Friday with support from the NH Association of Insurance Agents and Associated Builders and Contractors/New Hampshire Homebuilders Association. It focuses on opportunities within advanced manufacturing, automotive technology, biomedical technology, business and finance, construction and infrastructure, healthcare, hospitality and information technology sectors, in an earn-while-you-learn environment. "Since ApprenticeshipNH launched in 2017, the program has been widely successful and beneficial to everyone involved," Tracey Jackson, the ApprenticeshipNH grant manager, said. "In a challenging year, we were able to assist 31 New Hampshire businesses across the state to enroll 166 individuals in apprenticeship programs. We are excited to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week with events that offer unique opportunities for employers, educators, community members, and workforce development professionals to hear about how the program is evolving and solving New Hampshire's workforce puzzle." Golf Tourney Nets $30K For Make-A-Wish The Common Man hospitality chain selected Make-A-Wish NH as the beneficiary of its fall, invitational golf tournament and Rafting for Wishes fundraising effort. This led to more than $30,000 being raised for the organization. The chain has long supported the mission of Make-A-Wish, an org that grants wishes for children with critical illnesses. The company has sold paper wish stars, offered "eat a dish" menus, held raffles and spaghetti dinners, and other events for the organization. "The Common Man has renewed hope, uplifted spirits, and encouraged the impossible," Julie Baron, the president and CEO of Make-A-Wish NH, said. "They've transformed the lives of children across New Hampshire, giving them the power of a wish — their wish. It's wonderful to have the support of some of the best leaders in our community, who are known to 'DO GOOD.' They bring their motto to life every day through their generosity." Vince Vella, the CEO of the Common Man, thanked staffers, guests, vendors, and others who assisted with the effort. "We wouldn't be able to make such an impact for our non-profit friends without them," he said. Operation Santa Claus Needs Donations For more than 60 years, Operation Santa Claus has coordinated with the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services to provide gifts for children in need. Around 3,000 children are serviced in the state with more than half a million gifts donated to others. The coronavirus pandemic, however, has made it a bit tough collecting gifts and assisting children. Last year, the effort squeaked by. This year, the need is more important than ever. With just four weeks to ensure all the children have gifts this holiday season, the org is asking anyone who is interesting in making a donation to visit the Operation Santa Claus website, like here, as soon as possible.
