The board, recently established with the signing of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes – Montana Compact, will administer and manage all aspects of water use within the Flathead Reservation. The commissioners of each county whose boundaries include any portion of the Flathead Reservation will nominate individuals for Gov. Greg Gianforte's consideration for appointment to the board. Missoula County commissioners are allowed to submit two nominees for the governor's consideration. Qualified candidates must submit a cover letter and resume to the commissioners by 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, via email at [email protected] or mail at 200 W. Broadway, Missoula, MT 59802. To be eligible for nomination, an individual must be 18 or older and be a Flathead Reservation resident. For the purposes of filling a position on the board, a reservation resident is an individual who: does business within Flathead Indian Reservation boundaries; resides within Flathead Indian Reservation boundaries; or ·owns and maintains a seasonal residence within Flathead Indian Reservation boundaries. An eligible individual must also have education and experience in one or more of the following fields: natural resources management, public administration, agriculture, engineering, commerce or finance, hydrology, biological sciences, water law or water policy. State, local federal or tribal elected officials are not eligible for nomination to the board while holding elected office. However, state, tribal or federal employees or contractors will not be disqualified from board membership. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland signed the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes – Montana Compact on Sept. 17, which completed the federal process and authorizes the Tribes to enact the Compact along with the Montana Water Rights Protection Act Congress passed in 2020.
