EVANSTON, IL — A fire in an apartment building Monday damaged several units and displaced two residents. Fire officials said no one was injured in the blaze, which was reported around 12:30 p.m. in a three-story building in the 2200 block of Central Street. The first fire crews arrived within a few minutes of the call to find flames visible from the street and a moderate level of smoke, according to Division Chief Kim Kull. The Evanston Fire Department activated the mutual aid system to summon members of several neighboring departments, including Wilmette, Skokie, Glenview, Northfield and Des Plaines, to assist with fighting the fire and keeping it contained to the second-floor unit where it began. The blaze was extinguished within about 18 minutes, Kull said. Several apartments in the building suffered smoke and water damage, and the American Red Cross provided emergency services for two displaced residents, according to Kull. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
