ELMHURST, IL – Monday's Elmhurst City Council meeting wasn't the first time a sign at Dulles Cleaners got attention. And it probably won't be the last. At the meeting, a mother told aldermen about how a man spat on her son at the business where her son works. It was after her son asked the man to wear a mask. She blamed "misinformation" in town for contributing to the man's decision to spit on her son. One of her examples was a sign at Dulles Cleaners, 128 N. Addison Ave. The sign reads, "We must not let a tyrannical government mandate poisons that hurt our American families & professionals that we surely need." In an interview at his shop Tuesday, owner John Dulles said he was referring to the coronavirus vaccine. Dulles is a supporter of former President Donald Trump, who took credit for the vaccine last year and received the vaccine himself. The sign to the left in front of Dulles Cleaners refers to the coronavirus vaccine. It was brought up at Monday's City Council meeting. (David Giuliani/Patch) Asked whether he was upset with Trump for his role in the vaccine, Dulles said he was not. He said he used the word "poison" to spark a debate and "to get people to think." He said he did not think Trump was pushing poison. At the same time, Dulles doubted the vaccine's effectiveness and even said it could hurt people. He also said people should have the freedom of choice whether to take the vaccine. Neither the government nor any company should have the right to require employees to take the shot, he said. "I'm not telling anyone not to take a shot," he said. "It's their choice." Dulles also questioned whether masks work and said the government and companies have no business imposing mandates in that regard. At the same time, he said it was "super wrong" for someone to spit in another's face over a mask issue. He called such an action a crime. Last spring, Dulles faced a lot of wrath after photos of a sign he posted five months earlier went public. The sign read, "Pray for the Removal of Demonic Chinese Influence in Our Country." Many called it racist. It was apparently taken down shortly after it was put up. Last spring, Dulles told Patch he made a mistake in the wording and explained why. In July, he got into a shouting match with city officials after he was asked to stop speaking during public input. Patch posted video of the confrontation.
