Deputies Crack Down On Loitering Near Liquor Stores

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — One person was arrested and eight others were issued warnings as the Alameda County Sheriff's Office Crime Prevention Unit conducted an enforcement operation targeting Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) licensed businesses. The man who was arrested was loitering in front of a liquor store not far from San Lorenzo High School and was "stumbling dangerously close to traffic near the intersection of Lewelling Boulevard and Meekland Avenue." His Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) screened at .232. A level of .08 is considered impaired for driving. According to a post by sheriff's office spokesman Sgt. Ray Kelly, patrol units are often inundated with calls about people loitering in front of ABC businesses while drinking alcohol, littering, panhandling, and using illegal drugs. Those issued warnings were educated about open container laws. Business owners and employees were offered help to address ongoing issues. The Sheriff's Office plans to hold future enforcement operations. Funding was provided by the Department of ABC through the Alcohol Policing Partnership Program.
