Press release from the City of Greensboro: 11/01/2021 12:21 PM On November 16, Greensboro Parks and Recreation will hold two virtual public meetings to share the results of a feasibility study connecting the Bicentennial Greenway to Woodbrook Drive at Friends Homes West. The one-mile greenway will be developed on City-owned drainageway and open space and connect to Woodbrook Drive along an easement dedicated by Friends Homes. The meetings will be held online at 12 noon and 6 pm. Both meetings will consist of a pre-recorded presentation, followed by panel discussion with Greensboro Parks and Recreation staff and representatives from McAdams Engineering, who completed the feasibility study. To attend the meetings, join us virtually at either 12 noon or 6 pm. Not able to attend the virtual meetings? Watch the pre-recorded presentation and provide us feedback. For additional information, please contact Elizabeth Jernigan. About the Project Plan2Play, the department's 20-year comprehensive parks and recreation master plan, was adopted in 2019, and touched over 7,000 community members with recommendations backed by a statistically significant survey. During the planning process, 72 percent of participants identified paved greenways as the highest need in our system, with a focus on better connecting communities to our existing greenway system. Seventy-nine percent of participants also indicated they think it is important to use drainageway and open space properties in floodplains to provide a major connected network of walking, biking, and nature trails. Under our Land Development Ordinance (LDO), dedicated drainageway and open space may be used for drainage, open space, greenways, bikeways, trails, and other similar recreation activities, including park and trail related improvements in accordance with applicable regulations. Construction funding has not been identified at this time.
