RESPONSIBILITIES The Laborer shall perform general shipboard maintenance under the direction and supervision of the Ship Maintenance Supervisor or assigned supervisor or manager. -Shall be able to read and follow written and verbal directions -Shall have physical strength and stamina required to resist the vibrations of pneumatic tools which operate on 90 pounds of compressed air pressure. -Be able to walk, stand, climb, turn, crouch, kneel, stoop, enter tanks, voids, bilges and climb ladders in performance of the work. -Can handle weights of up to 50 pounds, and an average of 35 pounds. -Ties up vessels, cleans piers, vessel and craft decks, hulls, holds, compartments, engine rooms, magazines, bilges, voids and tanks. -Prepares surfaces for preservation using chipping hammer scaling tools, hand scrapes, power equipment and deck cleaning machines. -Applies proper preservation using paint brushes and paint rollers. Applies sealing compounds using hands, brushes or caulking tools. -Pumps tanks and bilges, installs and connects sump pumps, air driven reciprocating pumps, suction and discharge hoses. -Assist Mechanical and Electrical trades as required. -Assists in rigging and attaching, hoisting and pulling gear. -Act as a Fire Watch during Hot Work evolutions. -Act as part of a riding crew and receives or casts off vessels/craft at the facility. -Assigned to escort visitors including museum groups, military, subcontractors and government representatives as required. QUALIFICATIONS Minimum: High School diploma or equivalent. Be able to follow written and verbal instructions. Must be able to work cohesively with a team. Must qualify to wear a respirator. Be able to demonstrate proper connection/assembly, adjustment and operation of electrical, mechanical and pneumatic equipment used for preservation and maintenance of vessels within 90 days of hire. May be required to qualify as a Fire Watch and High Reach operator. Preferred: One year previous maritime or general labor experience. General Information: In order to perform the essential job functions of this position, candidate must be able to follow instructions of the assigned work group supervisor. Knowledge Required: Proper handling of material waste, that if mishandled could be hazardous to humans or the environment. Security Clearance: Must be categorized as a US Citizen per Inactive Ship Office Instruction 5500.3B of 13 May 13.
