Description

Please Note: PACC is no longer accepting small animals also known as "Pocket Pets" from the general public. HSSA is full and can only take new arrivals as space becomes available. What are small animal rescues doing in the community to help? Establishing ourselves as a safe place to foster animals who need homes until adoption. There are very few other options for hamsters, pet mice and Guinea pigs in Tucson. Our post consistently gets flagged so continue reading while you can. How can you help? Adopt. Adopt. Adopt. Don't buy from petstores or those breeding for profit. When you adopt you will be making a difference in 2 lives. The life of the one you adopt and the life of the one who will be admitted into our rescue next. Our goal is to find loving forever homes for all of our rescues as well as provide educational materials and resources for these fascinating pets. Hamsters are some of our most misunderstood rescues. Their care is often brushed off as unimportant when in fact how they are housed is very much something to consider. So we would like you to know.... #1. In the wild hamsters are ground dwelling animals that burrow and forage for food. Having the size of their cage be 600 square inches or more helps achieve this natural instinct. Those plastic and wire petstore cages are too small. Ask us for more details on bigger habitats. #2. Certain items sold in petstores marketed for a hamster are NOT safe. Examples are cedar and pine bedding, cotton nesting material, bathing dust, mineral chews, hay based diets like oxbow brand hamster food, wire or mesh wheels, and the rodent harness with leash attached. Ask us about alternatives to each of these. #3. Wheels are necessary for a hamster's health and well being. They HAVE to be appropriately sized so the hamster can run with a straight back. The wheel also needs to have a solid running surface to avoid bumble foot or mangled limbs. In the wild hamsters run 5 miles or more at night. Wheels satisfy this need to run and should not be removed or excluded from the habitat. Reach out to us for more information and assistance in choosing an excellent wheel. Locate us on Adopt-A-Pet or Petfinder under Home Sweet Hammy Home or look up our Facebook and Instagram pages to connect with us and request more information. Interested in helping us in our mission? We hope to hear from you soon then! We'd appreciate any volunteer and community support!
