NEW PORT RICHEY, FL — A 58-year-old teacher was arrested after being accused of assaulting an 11-year-old boy who was playing basketball near his home in New Port Richey Tuesday.
According to the police report, witnesses recorded video on their cell phones showing Donald Curtis Fawley, a science teacher at River Ridge Middle School, assaulting the boy.
A Pasco Schools assistant superintendent said the district learned of the arrest late Tuesday evening and immediately placed Fawley on administrative leave.
According to deputies, the incident began when Fawley asked a group of youngsters to stop playing basketball near his home. Deputies said the 11-year-old boy was bouncing a ball while Fawley was trying to speak to them. Irritated, Fawley yelled, "Yo," at the boy and told him to leave the area.

Deputies said both began swearing and Fawley pushed the boy. Witnesses separated Fawley and the boy, but deputies said Fawley did not try to remove himself from the situation. Instead, they said he put his hands around the boy's neck and shoved him, then squared off as if he was preparing to punch the boy.
Fawley was released from jail Wednesday on a $5,000 bond.
