STRATFORD, CT — Officials are encouraging the community to support local, small businesses in the town's annual "Shop Small Stratford" campaign. Mayor Laura R. Hoydick will be issuing a proclamation declaring Saturday, Nov. 27 – the Saturday after Thanksgiving – "Shop Small Stratford Day" in conjunction with the national program, Small Business Saturday. Many "Shop Small Stratford" participants are offering special deals and discounts on Nov. 27, according to officials. "The proclamation will be presented to Howard Aspinwall, owner of The Mellow Monkey, a Stratford based, award winning boutique," officials wrote in a news release. "Aspinwall has been spearheading 'Shop Small Stratford' since 2015, inviting local businesses to support one another." The Town of Stratford and the Department of Economic and Community Development will be recognizing Aspinwall for his dedication to supporting Stratford's small businesses by presenting him with the proclamation at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at The Mellow Monkey, located at 360 Sniffens Lane in Stratford. "Shop Small Stratford," an annual, one-day event capitalizes on Small Business Saturday which is nationally sponsored by American Express. In addition to shopping small on Nov. 27, town officials are urging residents to "keep the small business sector in mind throughout the holiday season and into the New Year." The proclamation states that "97% of Small Business Saturday shoppers recognize the impact they can make by shopping small, 85% of them also encouraged friends and family to do so too." There is no cost for a business to participate. All independently-owned Stratford based small businesses (with or without a physical storefront) can sign up to participate by contacting [email protected] or calling 203-385-4029.
