Braintree Students Walk Out Of Class Over Concerns Of Racism

BRAINTREE, MA — Hundreds of Braintree students walked out of class Monday morning over the handling of what they say is racist behavior at the school. Superintendent Jim Lee said about 300 students staged a walk out at Braintree High School and held a peaceful protest in support of racial justice both in town and across the United States. Students walked to the Five Corners, escorted by school administrators and local police, where several students spoke and held signs. "As a school, we recognize that these conversations are critical, and welcome the opportunity to continue discussing the issues brought up by the students who raised their voices today,"Lee said in an email. Whether the protest stemmed from a specific incident was not immediately made clear. After the protest, Lee said many students returned to the high school, while dozens continued their demonstration in front of Braintree Town Hall. Lee said the school day has continued without disruption or changes to the class schedule. A similar situation is unfolding just next door. In Quincy, both high school and middle school students planned a walk out for Monday over racist videos circulating on social media, NBC 10 Boston reported. Quincy's students also staged a walkout Friday over the videos.
