Here are the top four stories in Laurel today: November is National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month and Family Caregivers Month. Irma Nicholson, who is D.C. area advocate, is urging people to know the signs of Alzheimer's and get those close to them evaluated. Nicholson volunteers with the Alzheimer's Association. She is also a caregiver for her husband Mark Nicholson, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's 14 years ago. According to Nicholson, learning the 10 warning signs about the disease is necessary. (WTOP) Graded-stakes winners Laki, Pickin' Time, Informative and Magic Michael are among 114 horses nominated to five stakes worth $450,000 in purses over Thanksgiving weekend at Laurel Park. Stakes action begins on Nov. 26 with a pair of $75,000 events for Maryland-bred/sired horses, the seven-furlong Howard and Sondra Bender Memorial for 3-year-olds and six-furlong Politely for fillies and mares 3 and up. (laurelpark.com) Mayor Craig A. Moe and the City of Laurel has unveiled a new look for its existing BigBelly trash and recycling containers. These new items are a lime green color. The Think Green message surrounds the city seal. Mayor Moe hopes that this change will draw people to the bins and encourage them to place recyclables and trash in the right place. (City of Laurel)Governor Larry Hogan recently announced a series of statewide actions to combat the rise in anti-Asian hate and bias crimes. These actions include enhanced safety and enforcement measures, more robust community resources, and steps to empower educators and students. Gov. Hogan announced the establishment of the workgroup in April in response to the rise in violence and discrimination targeting the Asian American community.
