Police were told they had been gone for more than eight hours and that the father had no means of travel and no means of communication, she said.
A search that included Toms River police, members of the township's fire companies and the New Jersey State Police Aviation Unit found the father and boy safe in the area of Cattus Island at 9:48 p.m., Messina sid.
The Toms River Office of Emergency Management and Toms River Community Service Officers also responded to help "in the event that medical attention and/or long-term services were necessary," she said.
The incident remains under investigation, she said.
