WALNUT CREEK, CA — A man arrested in Walnut Creek last week following the stabbing death of his mother worked as a part-time sports writer for the Bay Area News Group, the news agency reports. Nicholas Roth, 41, was arrested last Monday on suspicion of Darlene Roth's murder. She was 74. Walnut Creek Police say it was Darlene who made the 911 call reporting that she had been stabbed. By the time first responders got her to the hospital, she was pronounced dead.
