Press release from the Bucks County Free Library: November 13, 2021 A lot of the public's awareness of the transgender community comes from movies, television shows and books. But for decades, media did not accurately represent or characterize transgender people. Transgender Awareness Week – November 13 to 19 – highlights transgender people and the issues faced by members of the community. It's also a time for allies to take action by speaking up against prejudice, discrimination and violence. Books for Children and Teens Born Ready: The True Story of a Boy Named Penelope by Jodie Patterson Penelope knows he's a boy (and a ninja). And he wants to help everyone understand him. In this enriching book, you'll see Penelope's frustrations and triumphs as he introduces himself to the world. Recommended age: 4 to 7 Book It Feels Good to Be Yourself by Theresa Thorn A sweet introduction to the concept of gender identity. Using child-friendly language and bright illustrations, this book child helps caregivers talk about this topic in a positive, inclusive way. Recommended age: 4 to 7 Book Jack (Not Jackie) by Erica Silverman Susan can't wait for her little sister, Jackie, to get old enough to play all the games she likes.
