DATE: Sunday, April 26th* TIME: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM WHERE: Crowne Plaza COST: $30 (Light Breakfast & Plate Lunch Provided) TopicsAbdominal Exploration & Organ Biopsy in Small Animals - Collin Wolff, DVM, DACVSObjective: This lecture goes over the following:-Indications for performing abdominal exploratory surgery and organ biopsy in small animals-Surgical planning considerations and appropriate surgical technique for performing a midline celiotomy and systematic evaluation of the entire abdominal cavity and viscera-Review of surgical anatomy and complemented by practical tips for improving abdominal organ examination and isolation-If time allows, we will discuss case examples to review proper surgical technique for organ biopsy, gastrointestinal surgery, and other common abdominal procedures Diet associated cardiac disease & the VRHOH experience - Scott Helms, DVM, DABVPObjective: This lecture will include a discussion of the pathophysiology of Dilated Cardiomyopathy in dogs and our current understanding of diet associated cardiomyopathy in dogs. Clinical cases of suspected diet associated cardiac disease will also be presented. Diet-associated DCM: the importance of nutrition communication & quality control - Megan Shepherd, DVM, PhD, DAVCVNObjective: In 2018, the FDA began investigating cases of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs fed some commercial pet food marketed as “grain free”. The unique aspect of these cases is that most are not taurine deficient, as found in some Goldens, and most are of atypical breeds, as found in some large breeds like the Doberman. The ongoing investigation of diet-associated DCM highlights the importance of nutrition communication, including a solid diet history and helping pet parents navigate pet food and treats. Drug Intervention in the Workplace - (*qualifies for 1 hr required NC CE- 2nd hr will be on 10/11/20) - Joseph Jordan, PhD, LPC, LCAS, NCC, MAC, CCSObjective: -Introduce the problem-Describe and educate about the disease concept-What happens to people when they get the disease and why do they do what they do-What is the solution? -Intervention-Treatment-Follow up Euthanasia Procedures & Protocols - Beth Marchitelli, DVMObjective: This lecture discusses traditional euthanasia protocols, including premedications and techniques for euthanasia solution administration. In addition, variations for specific diseases states such as cardiac disease and seizure disorders will be discussed. Lastly, alternative protocols and techniques will be explained, both for use in the home setting and in the clinic. Update on Intervertebral Disc Disease - Natasha Olby, DVM, Vet MB, PhD, MRCVS, DACVIM (Neurology)Objective: Participants will learn about recent changes in our understanding of different forms of intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) and herniation with associated spinal cord injury. They will become familiar with the clinical signatures of each form of disc herniation and learn the prognoses and treatment options for all forms of IVDD.
