Howard Frankland Bridge Reopens; Man Who Shot Self Dies

TAMPA, FL — The northbound outside lane and emergency shoulder of the Howard Frankland Bridge have reopened after being closed most of the day while the Florida Highway Patrol investigated a shooting. At 11:14 a.m., troopers responded to a shooting along the northbound lanes of Interstate 275 near Milepost 35 on the Howard Frankland Bridge. They found a Nissan SUV occupied by two Marco Island men, a 23-year-old driver and a 22-year-old passenger, who were stopped along the shoulder. The 22-year-old was found to have a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head from a 9 mm handgun. He was taken to the hospital where he died Friday night.
