ALBION, CA — Human remains found in a forested area in Northern California last year belong to a man who went missing more than 15 years ago, officials said Saturday.
David Neily was 69 when he was last seen by family members in Mendocino County's coastal town of Albion in March of 2006, the Mendocino Sheriff's Department said in a Saturday statement.
Last May, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office was contacted by the representative of a private forester who said one of his employees had found human remains in a remote area of Branscomb, officials said.
The remains were then sent to the California Department of Justice for DNA extraction and analysis. In October, Mendocino authorities were notified of a positive match to Neily.
While previous reports and Neily's daughter previously suggested foul play, authorities said his remains did not exhibit any evidence of trauma.
Neily was reported missing on July 24, 2006 from the area of Albion Ridge Road E.
During the original investigation, authorities found his vehicle on a property in Westport — about 3.5 miles from where his remains were found.
Anyone with information related to this case was urged to contact Mendocino County Sheriff's Office Detective Alex Johnston at 707-463-4086 or the Sheriff's Office Tip-line at 707-234-2100.
