Piedmont Park Stabbed More Than 50 Times In Fatal Attack

ATLANTA, GA — A woman killed while she was walking her dog this summer in Piedmont Park was stabbed more than 50 times, according to reports. Information released Friday by the Fulton County Medical Examiner said Katherine Janness was stabbed in the face, neck and torso on the night of July 28. Among the more than 50 stab wounds that investigators found on Janness were some formed into the letters that spelled out "F-A-T" on her body, Channel 2 Action News is reporting. The 40-year-old also suffered blunt force trauma and her dog, Bowie, found not far from her in the park, was also stabbed to death, Channel 2 reports. The details from the autopsy also reported that 15 of the stab wounds she suffered were to her head, according to reporting by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The still-unsolved crime shook Atlanta because of its unusual nature, prompting Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms to enlist the aid of the FBI. Janness left her home nearby around 10:30 p.m. and went into the park to walk her dog that July night and never returned, police said. The last image of her alive was taken just after midnight from a nearby camera. Her girlfriend found her inside the park near the 10th Street entrance to the park and called for help, according to police reports. Atlanta Police investigators continue working to identify anyone who may have been involved and are asking the public's help.
