Join the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in celebrating the season by making paper lanterns during Westfield UTC’s Winter Nights! MCASD invites you to enjoy another Family ArtLAB: Magical Lanterns. at a special holiday event time during Westfield UTC’s final evening of Winter Nights on December 11, 5-8pm. Get in the Holiday spirit by making paper lanterns, that are sure to brighten up your visit and bring a huge smile to the entire family. Throughout the ages, Chinese cultures have used paper lanterns not only as sources of light or simple paper decoration. They symbolize vitality, social status, and good luck. In this art making activity, we will be utilizing the outline of the very interesting “Zeus Triad” sculpture from Beverly Pepper. Have fun, be creative, and please share your finished creations by tagging @mcasandiego and @WestfieldUTC. About the Artist: Beverly Pepper (1922-2020) was an American artist known for her monumental sculptures, land art, and site-specific installations. She remained independent from any particular art movement and experimental in her practice. She began her artistic career at the age of sixteen, not much older than many of the kiddos that attend Family ArtLABs. She studied painting, design, and photography in New York and Paris and traveled extensively. EVENT DETAILS Visit Family ArtLAB anytime between 5pm-8pm near Tocaya Modern Mexican. Tables will be set up so that you can create the lanterns onsite. Be sure to stroll around Westfield UTC with your lit-up lantern and check out the other Winter Nights activities for the entire family! Registration is requested for this Family ArtLAB. Free to attend. This program is free and recommended for families with children ages five and older. While supplies last. If your family wants to create onsite, please wear clothes that you don't mind getting crafts on.
