GROTON, CT — Two men have been charged for attempting to steal catalytic converters from Penske Truck Rental, according to police. A 911 caller reported witnessing flashlights moving under a truck in the parking lot of the business at 901 Route 12 in Groton on Thursday at 2:50 a.m.
The caller also reported hearing what he thought was a saw cutting metal. Police responded and found a person wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt getting into the prone position and beginning to crawl under one of the Penske trucks.
The officer immediately ordered the man, later identified as James W. Good, to crawl out from under the truck. A catalytic converter was found lying on the ground under the truck, according to police.
The officer searched Good and found three reciprocating saw blades and a black knit hat in his hooded sweatshirt pocket.
Police investigated and found a second person was involved. State police were called in to assist. The second person, Wilbur L. Davis, was found in the woods about 1,000 feet south of the Penske Truck Rental parking lot.
Good, 47, and Davis, 44, both of Providence, RI, were charged with second-degree breach of peace, possession of burglar tools, third-degree criminal trespass, third-degree conspiracy to commit larceny, first-degree criminal mischief, and interfering with an officer.
Their bond was set at $25,000 each, and they will appear in court Friday.
