Press release from the City of Columbia Police Department: November 12, 2021 The Columbia Police Department's (CPD) Traffic Safety Unit (TSU) and Violent Crimes Against Persons (VCAP) Unit are investigating a fatal hit and run collision involving a pedestrian that occurred at the 800 block of Gervais Street. Officers were dispatched at approximately 3:00 a.m. (November 12, 2021).  The initial findings from the investigation have revealed that the driver who left the scene was traveling westbound in lane one and struck the 64-year-old male who was walking southbound across Gervais Street. Investigators are reviewing video surveillance related the collision. A picture of the vehicle in question will be released as soon as possible. It appears that the pedestrian was unlawfully in the roadway at the time of the collision and was not wearing reflective clothing. EMS pronounced him deceased at the scene. The Richland County Coroner's Office is assisting CPD with the investigation.
