Description

By Chris Jennewein, Times of San Diego November 11, 2021 Shipbuilder Austal USA announced plans to lease a 15-acre property on the waterfront in National City to repair the Navy's littoral combat ships and other government vessels. The site located immediately south of Naval Base San Diego will support a new dry dock designed to handle small surface combatants and other small- to medium-sized ships. Austal, which builds Independence-variant littoral combat ships and expeditionary fast transports in Alabama, will assume the lease of Marine Group Boat Works, which will focus on its yacht-repair business in Chula Vista. "This investment marks a major milestone in Austal's focus on growing our services business and anchors our commitment to servicing Navy, Military Sealift and Coast Guard ships in the INDO-PACOM region," said President Rusty Murdaugh. Austal's lease will be from the Port of San Diego, which owns the waterfront property and has approved the transfer.
