HARRISBURG, PA — As the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill approved by Congress last week awaits President Joe Biden's signature, details are emerging regarding what Pennsylvania can expect from the historic legislation. Gov. Tom Wolf's office has received White House estimates as to how much the state will receive for road and bridge projects, public transportation, electronic vehicle charging systems, new internet service and more. "These critical investments, along with state-level solutions, will help close Pennsylvania's growing transportation funding gap, connect Pennsylvanians to opportunities and each other, and move our commonwealth forward," Wolf said. "I look forward to the benefits this historic investment will provide in modernizing our infrastructure for the future of Pennsylvania." Citing historical formula funding, the White House anticipates Pennsylvania being able to make the following improvements with the money: $11.3 billion for federal-aid highway apportioned programs and $1.6 billion for bridge replacement and repairs. $2.8 billion over five years for public transportation. $171 million over five years to expand the state's electric vehicle charging network. At least $100 million to establish internet connections in areas currently lacking them. About 394,000 state residents don't have reliable internet access. Additionally, 23 percent of Pennsylvanians will be eligible for the Affordability Connectivity Benefit, which will help low-income families afford internet access. A portion of $3.5 billion being distributed to states for weatherization projects aimed at reducing family energy costs. $1.4 billion over five years for water infrastructure projects, like replacing lead pipes and modernizing treatment plants. $355 million over five years for airport improvements. $49 million over five years to protect against wildfires and $26 million to protect against cyber attacks.
