Motional anticipates its cars won't need a safety driver in the front seat by the time they get their commercial Las Vegas debut in 2023. Motional is able to go without a driver by using lidar to capture three-dimensional position data, as well as radar, cameras, and other sensors, for a "360-degree field view." Shortly after retirement, Cole was diagnosed with lymphoma. The cancer did not respond to the first round of treatment. Cole's owner, his previous handler, set up a GoFundMe, hoping donations help the canine fight a new threat.
