WHITE PLAINS, NY — The New York Department of Health announced that it is moving the state mass vaccination site currently at the Westchester County Center in White Plains to another location. The new mass vaccination site for the coronavirus vaccine will be at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. "We are not closing the State Mass Vaccination Site in Westchester County but merely transitioning the site to another location to better accommodate 5-11 year old vaccinations," according to a statement Patch received from Jeffrey Hammond, the health department's deputy director of communications. He said the county center location will be operational for people age 12 and up through Thursday, Nov. 18. The operation will then transition to the Westchester Medical Center on Friday, Nov. 19. "The new location will be fully operational and provide vaccinations for all eligible New Yorkers five and over," the statement said. The county center was designated a regional hub in January where people newly eligible for COVID-19 vaccinations under one of the state's early phases could eventually make appointments and be vaccinated. At the time, the federal supply of vaccines limited the state's ability to get New Yorkers vaccinated, because the state was only being sent 300,000 doses a week. Westchester County spokeswoman Catherine Cioffi did not respond to questions from Patch before publication, but she told the Journal News that what happens to the county center, which has in the pre-coronavirus days, hosted sporting events, concerts and trade shows, "is sort of fluid at this point." The county center was turned into an overflow hospital facility in March 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic, but no patients were ever cared for at the center. After next week, COVID-19 vaccinations can still be received at the state-run site in Yonkers at the New York National Guard Armory as well as at numerous retail pharmacies.
