Demolition Begins On Fire-Damaged Cheshire Bridge Road Bridge

ATLANTA — Demolition began Wednesday on the Cheshire Bridge Road bridge shut down in early August after a gas main fire. City of Atlanta officials announced the beginning of the work that will precede completely rebuilding the bridge that fords Peachtree Creek. A fire that started at the base of the bridge on Aug. 4 severely ruptured the 4-inch gas line running along the bridge, compounding the original damage caused at the outset of the blaze. The stretch of Cheshire Bridge Road along the bridge is a throughway between businesses and homes in Buckhead and the Virginia Highlands and North Druid Hills area and has remained closed since the fire. Atlanta Fire Rescue Department and the Georgia Department of Transportation deemed the bridge structurally unsound and an "unsafe … public hazard," closing the bridge and the portion of Cheshire Bridge Road between Woodland and Faulkner roads. City officials assessed the damage, estimating that it could take a year to demolish the structure, design a new bridge and rebuild it. Like this article?
