1pm poetry reading by Tureeda Mikell followed by an artist talk w/ John Simmons, ASC and Q & A session with audience. 1pm poetry reading by Tureeda Mikell in response to John Simmons' photographs followed by artist talk with John Simmons, ASC about his current exhibit, "Chronicles of Our Culture" on view at Joyce Gordon Gallery followed by a Q & A session with our audience. Tureeda Mikell is an award-winning poet and educator. Bay Area Writing Project Teacher Consultant, Story Medicine Woman, published poet and writer, Qigong Healer, storyteller, lyricist, astrologer and performance artist, has published 72 CA Poets in the Schools student anthologies since 1989. Has performed at Lawrence Hall and Golden Gate Academy of Sciences, MoAD, Randell, Oakland, and The DeYoung Museums, and has been featured storyteller for National Association of Black Storytellers. She is also the author of "Synchronicity: Oracles of Story Medicine." John Simmons, ASC has had a prolific career as both a still photographer and cinematographer. He has filmed numerous music videos and commercials for artists such as Stevie Wonder, Britney Spears, Snoop Dogg and many more. He has collaborated with filmmakers including Spike Lee and Debbie Allen, and has served as the Director of Photography for more than 25 television series. Simmons earned an Emmy for his work on Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn, another two nominations for his work on Pair of Kings, and a third for Family Reunion. His feature film credits include Once Upon a Time … When We Were Colored, The Killing Yard, Collected Stories, The Gin Game, Asunder, The Old Settler. His numerous documentaries include Richard Pryor, Here & Now (1983) to this year's Emmy Award winning Hollywood's Architect: The Paul R. Williams Story (2020). His photographs are are held in the collections of the J.
