'A Sousa Salute To Armed Forces' Planned Thursday In Patchogue

PATCHOGUE, NY — Atlantic Wind Symphony will play the works of John Philip Sousa and other patriotic works in his style in "A Sousa Salute to the Armed Forces" at the Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts on Thursday in celebration of Veterans Day. The "March King," a prolific composer who composed 10 operas, spent 12 years of his career as conductor of the United States Marine Band and performed at the Patchogue Theatre in 1923 and 1924, according to a news release from the theatre. The other works to be performed at the concert include Aaron Copland's "A Lincoln Portrait," which will be narrated by Patchogue Mayor Paul Pontieri. Trumpet soloist Charles Clausen will perform Herbert L. Clarke's "Stars in a Velvet Sky" as well as Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever." The concert will also feature a performance of the U.S. Armed forces service songs in recognition of veterans, as well as current active military and their families. The concert will kick off at 3 p.m. The Atlantic Wind Symphony, which was formed in 1968, is the oldest fully professional concert band on Long Island and prides itself on using only Long Island musicians, according to the news release. It has performed throughout the metropolitan area, including its premiere performance at Carnegie Hall in 1998, theatre officials said. The concert has been funded by the Decentralization Program, which is a regrant program of the state's Council on the Arts that was administered by The Huntington Arts Council, according to the news release. Tickets range from $9 to $24, but student and senior citizen discounts are available.
