RACERS: Have you decided to step away from active racing but want to stay connected? PARENTS: Is your junior aging out or still racing, but you want to continue supporting the next generation? ENTHUSIASTS: Are you or someone you know an avid cycling fan or rides recreationally? Consider becoming a USA Cycling Official. USA Cycling officials are responsible for safety and fairness by interpreting rules correctly and making sound decisions. The beginner referee or judge works under the supervision of a Chief Referee and Chief Judge in a variety of disciplines including road races, criteriums and circuit races, time trials, stage races, track races, cyclocross, and mountain bike events. Assignments include judging and scoring, timing, supervising the repair pit, moto referee, starter, and other duties as needed. Additional training and support are available through USA Cycling should you wish to advance to become a Chief Referee, Chief Judge, moto referee, or work at higher level national cycling events. To become a cycling official, an initial training class is required and passing a background check, an online course on abuse and harassment, and a motor vehicle records check for officials using vehicles during a race. All officials are licensed through USA Cycling, the sanctioning body for competitive bicycle racing in the United States. Cycling officials work as independent contractors and are assigned races by the Chief Referee of the race based on availability, interest, and experience level. Mentoring of new officials is provided. Races are typically held on weekends throughout most of the year. Officials are paid a modest daily rate, reimbursed for mileage, hotel room for officials coming from a distance, and per diem costs for multi-day races.
