HOBOKEN, NJ —Lines of hungry (and nostalgic) customers waited outside Giorgio's bakery in Hoboken on Sunday to get their last homemade cannolis, Italian cookies, cakes, and cream-filled lobster tails. The family that owned the pastry shop — which opened in 1974 —announced recently that it was closing for good. At one time, there were 19 Italian bakeries in the mile-square city. "I'm gonna need your pignoli cookie recipe though," wrote a loyal patron on Instagram last week. "Enjoy your next chapter. You sure have earned it!" After owner Giorgio Castiello passed away in 2019, the family listed the brownstone at 11th and Washington streets for sale for $2.5 million. Still, they carried on the legacy for a while, offering a bevy of Italian cookies behind the counter, with Giorgio's daughter Mary Grace and others working there. Giorgio's still put out their Christmas decorations even if just for a few days.Mary Grace told Channel 11 last month that the bakery may re-emerge someday in a different form. "We are part of the community and I am very grateful," she said, "but it's going to be a big change not to see everybody." On Instagram last week, she wrote, "Drum roll (as many of you already know), November 7, 2021 will be our last day. Stop by, pick up some treats and most importantly leave a note and your contact info in the guestbook pictured above. Finally, as I like to say — With calm, MG." There are other bakeshops in the city, but those serving pastries have opened in the last 15 years. Dom's Bakery is one longtime staple, but it's known for its bread.
