East Palo Alto Nonprofit Receives State Senate Recognition

EAST PALO ALTO, CA — Bayshore Christian Ministries, an East Palo Alto nonprofit, received a certificate of recognition last month from the California State Senate for its "Field of Hope," a renovated outdoor space for children and residents. The certificate, awarded by state Sen. Josh Becker (D-Menlo Park), praised the nonprofit for its "inspiring and extraordinary dedication to the residents and schoolchildren of East Palo Alto." More than 230 people attended a ceremony celebrating the opening of the new space on Oct. 10. The space features a basketball court, multi-use turf field, picnic area, walking path and a gathering circle with a campfire ring. Over 30 trees and 125 plants were also planted in the area. Renovation plans began in 2019. Bayshore Christian Ministries has served the East Palo Alto and Belle Haven communities since 1984, offering after-school, evening and summer programs for kids. Jeremy Lin, the former NBA player and Palo Alto native, helped fund the cost of the basketball court through his foundation. He also visited the court in April to play and speak with students. "To me, the court, sports and basketball are about unifying people," Lin said in a video message to the nonprofit. "We come together, we do amazing things. We get to play ball, exercise, and enjoy each other's company. I hope that the court is a source of unification and that you continue to pursue your dreams and enjoy working out and enjoy exercising every day." Lin's foundation helped raise over $110,000 to help fund the completion of the field. "BCM's Field of Hope is an example of East Palo Alto's resilience," East Palo Alto Councilmember Antonio Lopez said at the opening ceremony. "It's an oasis. The beauty of this outdoor space offers hope and inspiration to the community. As someone who grew up here and has seen the city transform, my heart warms knowing that this space is going to inspire countless students who are coming to these facilities.
