Description

LEMONT, IL — Lemont residents can help name the new downtown park, planned for the north end of Stephen Street. According to the park district, the naming committee has chosen three possible names for the park: Athens Park, Stephen Street Park or Heritage Bridge Park. Residents can choose the name they like best online. Athens Park was chosen as the Village of Lemont was known as the Village of Athens in the mid-1800s, according to the park district. Stephen Street Park would honor Stephen Street, which has been a main Lemont route since the early 1800s, according to the park district. The park will also be located on Stephen Street. Lastly, Heritage Bridge Park refers to Lemont's canal and quarry industry, as well as the Lemont Steel Swing Bridge, which was installed at the location of the future park in 1899, according to the park district. The naming of the new park will be done by board approval at the December board meeting, according to the park district. The park district is partnering with the Village of Lemont in the revitalization of the park land, which was the former location of the steel swing bridge and Tri-Central Marine Terminal.
