UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Two people were killed in a fire Wednesday night within a building on the Upper West Side, FDNY said. The deadly blaze took place around 11:35 p.m. within the fourth-floor apartment of 216 West 62nd Street (West End Avenue), FDNY said. Firefighters found a 44-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman within the UWS home, both were pronounced dead at the scene. A preliminary investigation by the NYC Fire Marshall deemed the fire not suspicious at the time, but the process remains ongoing. The FDNY did not provide a possible explanation for how the fire started. Police did tell the New York Post, though, that the blaze began inside a laundry room, and was preliminarily ruled to be electrical. The identities of the 44-year-old and 70-year-old are pending proper family notification.
