ALAMEDA, CA — The Alameda Police Department is seeking to reassure residents that it is working to keep streets safe for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians. Last week's collision that killed Supervisor Wilma Chan hit residents hard. The police department reorganized its staffing in August to address several public safety concerns, "including prioritizing the enforcement of dangerous vehicle code violations to increase traffic safety." Since then, police have made 25 DUI arrests, and increased the number of tickets issued to drivers. Officers are also educating the community, including a recent bike-along by a police captain as kids were riding to school for the day.
