Description

A photography exhibit of the Remembrance Walk and Soil Collection Ceremony, held in Rockville, MD on September 26, 2021. Following the recent Remembrance Weekend Symposium and Pilgrimage Walk, the exhibit, launched in collaboration with Peerless Rockville and Montgomery History, seeks to memorialize and honor two men who were lynched in Rockville – Mr. John Diggs-Dorsey in 1880 and Mr. Sidney Randolph in 1896. The exhibit is part of a larger initiative to educate and engage our community in acknowledging the history and legacy of lynching and racial terrorism in Montgomery County, Maryland. Working closely with the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, MoCoLMP is part of a larger effort to advance the cause of reconciliation in Maryland, advocating for public acknowledgement of these murders and working to honor and dignify the lives of the victims. As highlighted in the Montgomery County Council Proclamation of September 26, 2021, this exhibit “reminds us of our responsibility to understand our history and to work to repair and heal the damage of the past by acting in the present." Facemasks are required inside the Historic Red Brick Courthouse. Peerless Rockville Historic Preservation Ltd. is supported in part by funding from the Montgomery County Government and the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County and supported in part by a grant from the City of Rockville. Peerless Rockville Historic Preservation, Ltd. is an award-winning nonprofit, community-based organization founded in 1974 to preserve buildings, objects, and information important to Rockville’s heritage.  Peerless Rockville advances its goals through education, example, advocacy, and community involvement.
