SOMERVILLE, MA — A Somerville man has been taken into custody in connection with a racist incident on the MBTA earlier this week, MBTA Police said. On Friday, "derogatory racial slurs" were directed at a woman riding the red line with a 1-year-old between Kendall Station and Park Street, police said. A water bottle was also thrown at the woman. TPD officers placed Shawn Cook, 43, of Somerville into custody at the MBTA's Sullivan Square station on Tuesday, police said. Cook was then transported to TPD headquarters for the arrest booking process. Officials had released photos of a person of interest on Monday, and Cook was identified based on an investigation by Transit Police detectives and tips from the public. Police called him a person of interest relative to a civil rights violation investigation and assault by means of a dangerous weapon.
