STAMFORD, CT — A 26-year-old man Bridgeport man now faces a manslaughter charge related to the 2020 drug overdose death of a 39-year-old Stamford woman, according to the Stamford Advocate. Last month, police said Rodney Spann Jr. sold drugs to a Stamford woman just prior to her overdose death on Sept. 10, 2020 in her Washington Boulevard apartment. The Advocate reported the woman's body was discovered by someone who was hired to walk her dogs. The Advocate reported that Assistant State Attorney Daniel Cummings filed a second-degree manslaughter charge against Spann on Tuesday. Spann was arrested last month by Stamford police on a warrant that charged him with selling narcotics and conspiracy at selling narcotics related to the woman's death, Capt. Richard Conklin of the Stamford Police Department said last month. Several days after a raid and search warrant was executed at Spann's home and vehicle on Oct. 13, he was charged with stealing a firearm, failure to store a firearm, criminal possession of a firearm, possession of narcotics, possession with intent to sell, sale of a narcotic substance, two counts of sale of controlled substance, and operation of a drug factory, police said. An investigation into the overdose of the victim over a year ago led police to calling Spann a person of interest, Conklin said. Police used an undercover officer to purchase counterfeit Percocet pills and heroin from Spann, Conklin said. Using the purchases and a cell phone workup, search warrants were obtained for Spann's person, home and vehicle. Drug Enforcement Agency officials, the Bridgeport Police Gang Unit, and the Darien Police Department helped execute the warrants. Spann was seen walking near his Weber Street home in Bridgeport on the afternoon of Oct. 13. As officers approached him, he threw four "bundles" of heroin on the ground, Conklin added, noting that a bundle is equal to 10 bags. At Spann's home, officers found 41 wax bags containing fentanyl; 59 wax bags of heroin; a bag containing 5.2 grams of crack cocaine; a bag containing 3.8 grams of cocaine mixed with heroin; and another bag containing 12.3 grams of fentanyl, Conklin said. Officers also found a loaded Smith and Wesson M&P 9 mm handgun which was recently reported lost out of New Haven, $295 in cash, and packaging equipment used for the sale of drugs, Conklin said. The Advocate said Spann is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 18. Read more from the Stamford Advocate
