Today's Top Story Massachusetts State Police are working to determine whether criminal charges are warranted following Tuesday's five-car crash on Interstate 495 in Raynham that killed a Braintree woman and an East Bridgewater man. State Police identified the victims as Lauren Dyer, 62, of Braintree and Christopher Sheppard, 57, of East Bridgewater. Emergency officials pronounced Dyer dead at the scene, while Sheppard died Tuesday night at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. State Police called the crash "complex" and said it involved five vehicles, one of which was pulling a trailer. The crash happened around 7:15 a.m., near exit 22. Read the full story. Also on Tuesday, the Lynn woman accused of shouting racial insults at three Black families and nearly hitting them with her car in Swampscott last summer pleaded guilty to eight counts of civil rights violations and eight counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Mask mandates expiring: Some Massachusetts cities are letting local, indoor mask mandates expire. In Medford, the Board of Health voted Monday to rescind the city's indoor mask mandate for businesses. Officials cited weeks of declining case counts and maintaining a positivity rate of under 2 percent, as well as increased access to the COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5-11. And in Salem, the Board of Health did not act to extend the city's indoor mask order — which began on Aug. 23 — beyond the original Nov. 13 expiration date during its regular meeting on Tuesday. In order to extend the mandate now, the Board would have to call a special meeting by Friday night. A suspect was killed after being shot by officers, authorities said.
