BELLEVUE, WA — Bellevue students will have an extra day off this week after the school district announced classrooms would stay closed the Friday after Veterans Day, citing staffing shortages and potential weather concerns. Bellevue's announcement came just hours after neighboring Seattle canceled Friday classes, saying in a letter to families that too many employees were taking leave on Friday to properly staff the state's largest school district. In a note shared late Tuesday afternoon, the Bellevue School District would stay closed Friday, "because of staffing shortages, anticipated inclement weather and COVID-19 restrictions." "Some of the creative solutions we have provided in the past with staff shortages will not work with the COVID-19 restrictions," the district wrote. "For example, combining classes is not an option at this time." District officials directed families who need to arrange childcare for the unplanned day off to check with Right at School. Bellevue schools will make up for the missed day on Jan. 28, 2022.
