DENVER, CO — A person is in custody after a Denver police officer was shot and wounded Tuesday evening, officials said. The officer was in plain clothes, without a protective vest, when he was shot in the back, police said. Officers were called to South Knox Court and Kentucky Avenue just after 4 p.m. after they received a report of a dispute over a dog, according to Joe Montoya, division chief with the Denver Police Department. Police were then called back to the same area just before 5:30 p.m. after they received a report of an armed person trying to get into a home, Montoya said. The officer in plain clothes, who was part of the police department's Impact Team, arrived shortly after and was shot, authorities said. The Impact Team, which includes a sergeant, officers and a mental health clinician, is a versatile unit that aims to support neighborhoods and officers with longer-term help, particularly after violent incidents. Drivers were asked to avoid the area around South Knox Court and Kentucky Avenue while an investigation was underway.
