Press release from Richland County School District Two: 11/9/2021 An awards celebration is taking place Tuesday, November 9, 2021 for students and instructors at the Richland Two Institute of Innovation R2i2 Student Innovation Center. The R2i2 team of students that developed and presented the COVID Contact Tracer for the 2021 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition is the winner of the 2021 Ibrahim Janajreh Young Innovator Award. The Award, sponsored by Michelin NA, was established in 2005 to recognize successful South Carolina programs that engage, encourage and acknowledge young people in the areas of science, technology, math and innovation. "To be recognized as the 2021 Ibrahim Janajreh Young Innovator Award winner is an absolute honor. Being chosen to receive this award means we continue in the great tradition of The R2i2 team includes current students Faith Aiken, Haley Fetzer, Malaki Hall, Joseph Hicks, Jermaine Johnson, Drake Lesher, Jasmine Montalvo, James Wilcher, Jackson Phillips – and spring graduates Kiana Wilcher, Devereaux Blake, Dylan Purday, and Nicholas Brown. The instructors are Kirstin Bullington, Robin Jones and Nicolas Jones. The R2i2 Student Innovation Center focuses on preparing students for the workplace, certification programs and/or higher education. Students in grades 10-12, from all five of the district's high schools, take courses at R2i2 including App Development and Coding; Next Energy Engineering; Marketing and Social Media; Pastry and Baking; 3D Printing and Design; and Animation and B.E.A.T.S. (Beginning Engineering of Audio, Technology, and Sound).
