PETALUMA, CA — If you cringe at the prospect of making a trip to a gas station in Petaluma, you're not alone. Regular unleaded gas prices recently hit an all-time high in Sonoma County as prices continued to climb across the country, according to an analysis by AAA. The average price for regular unleaded gas in Sonoma County was $4.836 per gallon as of Tuesday. A year ago, the Sonoma County average was about $3.32. On Saturday, the Santa Rosa metro area saw its highest recorded average gas price of $4.839. On Tuesday, the average gas price fell slightly in the Santa Rosa metro area to $4.836. By comparison, the national average Tuesday was $3.42 per gallon and the Golden State's average was $4.63 per gallon. The highest recorded average gas price in California was $4.67 in October 2012. Diesel prices in the Santa Rosa metro area hovered below the all-time record of $5.12 per gallon set in 2008, but it's still not cheap to fill up. A gallon of diesel in the Santa Rosa metro area will set you back $4.92 on average, according to AAA. That's up from last year's average of $3.48. California's gas prices were among the nation's highest, according to AAA, and Sonoma County's gas prices were among the highest in California. Here are the counties with the highest average gas prices in the Golden State as of Tuesday: Mono County: $5.45 Humboldt County: $4.98 San Francisco County: $4.87 Marin County: $4.85 Del Norte County: $4.84 Sonoma County: $4.83 Napa County: $4.83 San Mateo County: $4.83 It's possible that the end of daylight saving time and onset of shorter days could contribute to lower prices, said AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross. "Drivers may head straight home from work to avoid the darkness rather than tack on side trips for shopping or errands," he said in a statement. See how other California counties stacked up in AAA's analysis.
