Description
Scott Fairlamb, who punched a police officer during the January 6 riot was sentenced to 41 months in prison on Wednesday, becoming the first rioter sentenced who was charged with violence against the police.
He was also sentenced to 36 months of supervised release following his time in prison and will have to pay $2,000 for damage done to the Capitol. Fairlamb pleaded guilty in August to assaulting a police officer and obstructing an official proceeding.
Fairlamb's sentence will likely set an early benchmark for how harshly rioters charged with violence may be punished.
The judge said that other January 6 defendants in situations similar to Fairlamb's are "going to get a lot more" time in prison if they go to trial and would be wise to follow Fairlamb's example and plead guilty.
