LOS GATOS, CA — The Youth Science Institute, a South Bay nonprofit, is offering three "Science Saturdays" this month at Vasona Lake in Los Gatos, beginning this weekend. The four-hour events are intended to provide space for children to explore in nature while learning about science, according to the organization. The first event, held Nov. 6, was called "Crawlies Aren't Creepy" and featured learning about insects followed by a nature walk. This Saturday, the institute will host "Life as an Ohlone," which will teach kids how the Ohlone people — who first inhabited the Bay Area — lived and survived in nature. On Nov. 20, "Shake, Rattle, and Geology!" will teach kids about the layers of the planet, including discussions of volcanoes and plate tectonics. The programs cost $85 or $90 per child.
