SCOTTSDALE, AZ — A Maricopa County Sheriff's lieutenant was struck by a vehicle and killed Wednesday morning in Scottsdale, according to Sheriff Paul Penzone.
Lieutenant Chad Brackman, 47, was directing traffic near the intersection of 87th Street and McDowell Road around 10:50 a.m. when he was hit.
He was taken to HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center for treatment, but Penzone said that the impact of the vehicle that hit Brackman was so severe that emergency workers could not save him, even though they did everything they could. Brackman was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Brackman was a 22-year veteran of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. He leaves behind his wife, two children and two step-children.
The person driving the vehicle that struck Brackman is being treated for injuries at Osborn Medical Center. Police have not publicly identified the driver. As of Wednesday afternoon, McDowell Road was shut down between North Granite Reed Road and Pima Road while Scottsdale Police investigators continued their work at the scene of the crash.
The law enforcement community, as well as the Phoenix-area community lost an important man on Wednesday, Penzone said.
"He really was just a kind, beautiful man with a good family," Penzone said of Brackman.
