WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington firefighters extinguished a fire with a risk of a hazmat incident Monday morning, Chief William Cavanaugh said. The call came in at 9:29 a.m. for a structure fire at 330 Ballardvale Street, the site of Monogram Foods Factory, Cavanaugh said. The fire was in a storage building, not the main building at the address. When the first crews arrived, staff said there were chemicals stored in that building, so the department initiated a hazmat response. Like this article? Firefighters knocked down the fire around 9:46 a.m. The hazmat team investigated and determined that while there were hazmat materials in the building, they were not involved in or compromised by the fire, the chief said. Hazmat involvement was ruled out at 10:19 a.m. The last crew left around 2 p.m. The fire began in the back of the building but the cause has not been determined. The building is salvageable. Andover and North Reading firefighters assisted at the scene, while Tewksbury and Reading provided station coverage. The State Fire Marshall's investigation unit is assisting Wilmington Fire's arson investigation unit with the cause determination. There were no injuries, Cavanaugh said. This story has been updated.
