WALTHAM, MA — Bentley University President Brent Chrite has spoken out against sexual violence in the wake of public reports of assault on campus. Chrite's statement comes after the Student Government Association released a list of demands proposed to the university to enact change. These demands were presented during the weekend of Oct. 30 and included several recommendations for accountability. "I am grateful to our student leaders who have raised their voices to demand change," said Chrite in a Nov. 1 letter. "My administration and I share in the anger and frustration voiced in the letter, as examples of sexual assault and misconduct continue to occur in our community." "Let me say it clearly: at Bentley there is no place for sexual harassment, discrimination, assault or misconduct," he continued. "I will not tolerate this behavior and will hold to account those who are found to perpetrate these actions. Nothing is more important than the safety and well-being of our community. The university takes allegations of sexual misconduct extremely seriously and we are dedicated to supporting and protecting the survivors who report these incidents." Although Bentley recently announced new initiatives to combat sexism and sexual assault, including increased accessibility of resources, specialized training for staff, clarity on employee reporting responsibilities, a review of current policies, and expanded partnerships, the SGA's demands would greatly expand on these efforts. Bentley administrators were scheduled to meet with the SGA on Nov. 2 to discuss their recommendations, which Chrite deemed "understandable and reasonable." In addition, Chrite said he planned to meet with the SGA himself this week to continue the conversation. "We must continue to work towards fostering a more caring, respectful and safe campus environment for all," he said. "I look forward to progress and action by all members of this community in the days and weeks ahead, and we will continue to share updates with everyone on that effort." More information about Bentley's current resources for those affected by sexual violence is available here.
