POMPANO BEACH, FL — After a 19-month hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic, a Brightline train hit a car in Pompano Beach on its first day back in service. A grandmother and her 1-year-old grandchild were in the car when it was struck by the high-speed train around 10 a.m. Monday, Local 10 News reported. A spokesperson for Brightline told the Miami Herald that the 71-year-old was heading east on Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard when she made a right turn and began traveling south on the train tracks. As the train approached her from behind, the woman tried to drive off the tracks, but the train hit the back of her car, spinning it around, reports said. The grandmother and the child suffered non-life-threatening injuries. None of the 53 passengers on the train were injured. The father told Local 10 that his child is "a miracle baby," adding, "It's a blessing. Nobody should have come out alive in this type of crash. Nobody."
