Description
The Child Tax Credit helps families afford the everyday expenses of raising a child. It is worth up to $3,600 per child—half payable in 2021 and half payable in 2022 as a tax refund. If you have kids aged 0 to 17 and have not claimed your Child Tax Credit (CTC) to receive advance payment from the IRS in 2021, you must act by November 15. If you filed a 2019 or 2020 tax return, you're set. If you are not required to file a return but want to file to claim CTC for free, here are ways you can act by November 15: Use GetCTC.org/nyc, or getctc.org/es for Spanish, to file a simplified return yourself.Must earn under $12,400 (single filer) or $24,800 (joint filers).File your taxes using NYC Free Tax Prep.Must earn under $48,000 (single filer) or $68,000 (families). An IRS certified VITA/TCE volunteer preparer can guide you on how to make sure you get your payments. Use the NYC Free Tax Prep Map to find a site offering virtual or in-person appointments near you. Assistance is available in multiple languages. Learn more at nyc.gov/taxprep. If you're eligible for CTC but not for the free services above, be sure to get the Consumer Bill of Rights Regarding Tax Preparers before using a paid tax preparer. Many New Yorkers have received advance payments to use for child care, tuition, clothes, shoes, and other necessities like food and rent, and so many other needs that come with raising a child. Don't miss out on your payment. Nearly all families with children are eligible. Each child must have a Social Security number (SSN) and adults can have SSN or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). Advance CTC payments do not count as income and do not affect eligibility for SNAP, TANF, Medicaid, or CHIP. New Yorkers are eligible for payment even if they are incarcerated, experiencing homelessness, or have no income. Don't miss the deadline—apply by November 15 to get up to $1,800 in time for the holiday season to help ease your financial stress.
